Hit The Links

No waves so I decided to play some golf. Maybe I should be focusing more energy on golf. Nearly got a hole in one!

This pic is legit!

Boycott

Check out the new surfmobile (on loan). I can fit my board in the surfmobile which is cool. Best part, I'm now driving in the carpool lane.

Went to Scarborough Beach. I've talked about this before, but NOW they are officially being boycotted. It's supposedly a State Park, but the access road/parking lot is privately owned. They won't even let me park in the street and walk down to the beach to see if there are any waves. Again, I paid the $10 entry fee ($5 for beach goers, $10 for surfers--yet another scam) only to leave once I saw there were no waves. They call that throwing money away.

I'm All Set

Bye Bye Surfmobile

It was a sad day. I had to say goodbye to the surfmobile. We've had some good times together, especially playing games with the popo. Looks like I'm gonna have to go back to Hatteras to get another OBX sticker.

Mess with the surfmobile and "he'll flip ya." Fortunately no one was hurt.

Feel So Good, Feel Alright

Smokin' session this morning. Surprisingly, I was the only one out there. Hit a couple big ones and was turning good on a couple others. Gotta hone my skills for the 2011 Ocean Park Longboard Invitational. If I can't walk the board, I'll be out in the opening heat. I think it will be fun--even though I'll get the boot.

It's quite spectacular to be out there bobbing amongst the waves as they keep coming in like rolling hills. Hope you don't need your board. I see Eugene is now out there.

Third pair of slippahs in 15 months.

Hey Hey What Can I Do

There haven't been any waves since forever. Hopefully, I won't forget how to surf. If things stay this way, I may have to get a 'real' job.

Gabby Reece talking about her husband Laird Hamilton, “ Laird gets really down when there are no waves, he says: ' It’s kinda like being a dragon slayer when there are no more dragons left to be slayed'.”

Everything But Surf

ISD was everything but surfing. There was a keg on the beach which was cool. There was an interesting crowd--a bit different from what I'm used to. It seems as though everyone there travels the world to surf. The best part, I guess, is that I met the who's who (if you can call it that) of surf in Maine. So that should help me out in the lineups. I did tell them I was looking for snake so I could throw a beer in his face. Also no one knew the answer to my trivia question..."why do they call it goofy foot?" My blog readers know this answer.

Met Evan, a little kid, who was riding this unicycle. He was sick, riding peg leg and doin' all sorts of tricks. As you can see, Big Wave needs more practice--nearly got killed.

ISD and Surfriders market themselves as 'beach clean up.' The only beach clean up is...they clean up the mess they bring. It's basically just a party.

Let The Games Begin

It's that time of year again. International Surfing Day. This year it's being held in OOB. Tried the stand-up paddle again. Man oh man is that tough. At least I got up this year and paddled for a little bit. Every muscle in my body was a shakin', a rattlin', and a rollin'.

Already hooked up with some of the people and the festivities are gonna be held at Barry's--BBQ, Live Music, Bon Fire, and of course some pops. I'm bringin' some PBR to hand out. Get in good with the locals. Glad I know Barry and Nancy (surf shop owner)..."I've got friends in all the right places." I think they're gonna surf after having pop. That's a big no-no

Tennis Anyone?

I played tennis with Samantha today. She was afraid to try surfing. Maybe next week. She's doing pretty good for a beginner. She got me all tuckered out. I was chasing balls all over the court. Big Wave isn't as quick as he once was.

The only drain is that I had to wear sneakers. That really cramps my style. Same deal when I go hiking. I have to wear boots. Give me slippahs each and everyday!!! Don't even get me going on wearing pants.

Wet Canvas

An artist needs a canvas. I have a brush and paint. Show me where you'd like me to paint my masterpiece.

Happy Days Are Here Again

"Rock me baby." That's what the ocean did...She showed me who's boss. It was fun though. I managed a couple in between getting tossed every which way. At least there were some waves!!!

A note to first time readers: No blog entry means no waves. Not to worry, "Happy Days Are Here Again!"

Goofy

If you place your right foot forward, you are considered to ride goofy foot as opposed to regular/natural foot where your left foot is forward. These terms are simply referred to as Regular or Goofy. Interestingly enough, the term 'goofy' comes from a 1937 Walt Disney Short, "Hawaiian Holiday," where Goofy surfs with his right foot forward. This term still holds true today in all board sports, e.g., surfing, skateboarding, snowboarding.

If you wanna see Goofy surf (actually catch a wave) go to the 7:40 mark. This is where the term originates.

Free Lessons

Brought Melora, a yoga instructor, surfing today. She had previous fears of the Ocean. I hooked up with Barry who just moved in for the Season. He let me borrow a soft board. I offered him money, but he refused. Ah, Maine--The Way Life Should Be.

Melora struggled at first but began to rock the waves. Bear in mind, I took her to an advanced level class. We didn't pitter-patter with the white water. She was catching real waves.

I returned the board to Barry with some surfers' brew, PBR. So both Melora and Barry are stoked!!!

Nice Sets

As I reached the crest of the dunes, I noticed four well-formed mounds peering from the sand. Was this a sandcastle? No, apparently clothing is optional at the office.

Oh yeah, back to work. There were nice sets coming in this morning. Had some really fun rides. Too bad the interns got canned. They would have enjoyed the morning session. Although they probably would have been snoozing. That's why they got the axe.

Speckled

Originally Fred and I were gonna hike Mahoosuc Notch but opted for a warm up run. Good thing we did because we were both a huffin' and a pufffin' within the first 10 minutes. This is a view from Speckled Mountain--supposedly an easy trek. Hiking is brutal. Fred's a warrior. He tells me all I do is bitch and moan every hike.

It is only now that I am reminded...I was out of commission for a whole week last year after our Mt. Washington hike. Woulda posted yesterday, but I was beat and crashed hard!!!

Next time, if I'm not officially retired from hiking, I'm gonna hire a helicopter to get back down. Once reaching the top, there is no need to hike back down. Going up is bad, but coming down is worse.
